The emeralds are treated in a lot of ways to improve their clarity.
One of the most common practices of treating the emeralds involves oiling them. Usually cedar oil is used to oil the emeralds as it has a similar refractive index. The use of oil to make the emerald clearer is accepted in the gemstone industry.
Them there are some other treatments which employ the use of green-tinted oil to increase the clarity. Well, it is certainly not accepted by the various emeralds dealers.
There are four types of grading that are associated with treatment. This grading depends on the type of treatment and the results achieved. Usually, the gems treatment involves, minor, moderate and high enhancement. These categories are meant to tell the buyers as to how much the gems have been enhanced, not how much clear they are.
The emeralds with absolutely no treatment enhanced features will have some visible inclusions. Sometimes, even a small presence of the oil can signal enhancement, while in other cases the oil’s presence has to be a little higher so as to signal treatment.
